abstract = {Greek natural lakes are discerned into three categories according to depth: very shallow lakes (GR-VSNL, mean depth< 3m), shallow lakes (GR-SNL, mean depth: 3-9 m) and deep lakes (GR-DNL, mean depth >9 m) (Kagalou et al., 2021). Lake zoobenthos is regularly examined for the classification of ecological status according to Water Framework Directive (WFD) (EU, 2000). Research objectives are to present the benthic macroinvertebrate communities in the Greek natural lakes, classify their ecological status & to investigate potential differences in benthic macroinvertebrate communities according to lake depth.},

abstract = {According to WFD, the composition and abundance of biological communities guide the assessment of lake ecological status; physicochemical parameters, such as nutrients, are supportive elements in this process. In this context, the thresholds of Good-Moderate (GM) status for Total Phosphorus concentrations (TP) in two high alkalinity lake types in Greece have been proposed using a European toolkit. Our objective was to investigate the conformity of GM thresholds for TP with changes in biological communities of two types of lake ecosystems, shallow polymictic and warm monomictic, in Greece. We examined pressure response relationships using data collated from the National Monitoring Network. We plotted parameters of phytoplankton, aquatic macrophytes and water transparency across TP concentrations in the two types of natural lakes. In TP threshold values of 20-40 μg/l changes in biological communities and water transparency were observed in both lake types. These nutrient thresholds seem comparable with the ones proposed with the application of a standard toolkit. Changes in the composition and abundance of biological communities, as well as in water transparency, appear to be explained by TP concentrations in two types of natural lakes in Greece. Efforts should focus in minimizing phosphorus loading in lake waters.},

abstract = {The composition, abundance and biomass of phytoplankton are long considered as indicative of the eutrophication pressure in lakes. In addition, cyanobacteria-formed algal blooms are mostly linked to poor water quality. The objectives of the present study were a) to explore phytoplankton groups and physicochemical parameters of lakes in a Mediterranean setting and b) to investigate the response of phytoplankton taxonomic groups to phosphorus loading in those lakes. We analyzed data from the National Monitoring Network from 2019-2021 for 16 freshwater lakes in Greece. Water transparency, ionic composition and Total Phosphorus (TP) were correlated with major phytoplankton groups (chlorophytes, dinoflagellates, cryptophytes, bacillariophyceae and cyanobacteria). Based on both phytoplankton and physicochemical parameters, two groups of lakes were formed in cluster analysis, corresponding a) to deep warm monomictic and b) shallow and very shallow polymictic lakes. With regard to the impact from phosphorus loading, in both groups of lakes, a considerable increase of cyanobacteria biomass along a TP gradient was observed. Chlorophytes showed a statistically significant response in relation to TP in shallow and very shallow lakes. The results highlight the importance of phytoplankton in monitoring and evaluation of the status of aquatic ecosystems as phytoplankton biomass and community structure respond to changes in environmental parameters.},

abstract = {Lake Kastoria, in northwestern Greece, is a shallow urban natural lake. The objectives of this study were a) to investigate spatial and temporal variations of benthic macroinvertebrate communities in Lake Kastoria and b) to assess the lake water quality with the use of a WFD-compliant national method. Samplings were undertaken at the littoral zone of the lake at 5 selected sites during spring 2017 and 2021, according to the Hellenic Lake Littoral Benthos (HeLLBI) assessment method. Non-metric multidimensional (NMDS) scaling and one-way analysis of similarity percentages were applied to visualize similarities and to identify the taxa responsible for the discrimination in benthic macroinvertebrate communities between different sampling periods, among sites and water quality classes. In total, 5569 individuals were collected and 37 taxa groups were identified. NMDS plot provided a useful display of the actual multivariate distance among samples (stress value: 0.14). Benthic invertebrate communities showed considerable spatial variation at local scale (sampling site level) except for one site but no clear temporal variation. The mean EQR value of HeLLBI showed moderate water quality of the lake. All sites showed no change in their water quality across time except for 2 sites that improved (poor to moderate and good respectively). Benthic macroinvertebrates communities at good water quality sites differed in composition and showed higher biodiversity compared to those at moderate and poor sites. Management measures should be site-adapted in Lake Kastoria and priority could be given to the conservation and restoration of the littoral zone.},

abstract = {Lake Koronia, Greece, is a wetland of international and European importance (Ramsar and Natura 2000 site). The lake has deteriorated in terms of habitats, water quantity and quality since 1995, resulting in mass fish and bird deaths. We monitored abiotic and biotic (aquatic macrophytes) parameters between 2015 and 2021 to investigate recovery progress, following implementation efforts of a restoration plan. Abiotic conditions were recorded monthly/seasonally, while vegetation data were recorded in two periods (June 2017, 2020). After an initial considerable increase in water level, mean annual values fluctuated at around 70-71 m asl. Water transparency values were low while conductivity values were high. Three vegetation units were present: Lemnetea, Potamogetonetea and Phragmitetea, represented by few taxa. Helophytic taxa formed a narrow littoral reedbed (< 10 % of the lake area). Few rooted hydrophytes were present but limited to sparse patches (< 5 % of the total abundance). These results indicate that vegetation stabilization or even further expansion could be possible, given that hydrological and physicochemical conditions improve. The possible recovery of this fragile ecosystem depends on both the mitigation of anthropogenic pressures and favourable natural conditions. The continuation of restoration measures and monitoring efforts are considered necessary in this direction.},

abstract = {Natural and artificial lakes (reservoirs) are ecosystems of major importance; however, environmental pressures such as eutrophication, global warming and overexploitation of water resources put a pressure on them (Gaglio et al. 2017). Phytoplankton is an important element of aquatic ecosystems and a significant indicator of water quality as it responds directly to eutrophication pressure (Hajnal and Padisák 2008). The objectives of this study are: i) to present recent data on phytoplankton communities of Greek reservoirs; and ii) to investigate their correlation with land cover of river basin and water resources management.},

abstract = {If the worst predictions of general circulation models (GCMs) about climate change become true, then lakes will hardly manage to maintain their current conditions (Zhang et al. 2016) especially in regions, which have been identified as climate change hot spots such as the countries of Mediterranean Basin (Loizidou et al. 2016) from which Greece is of special interest since it has 54 lakes/reservoirs of 0.5 km2 minimum size. The hydrological models are important tools for assessing the water balance components of lakes and for supporting the design of water management strategies. Depending on the modelling purposes and the specific attributes of a lake, different types of models and different levels of model complexities can be selected, starting from complex models such as MIKE SHE (Abbott et al. 1986), WATLAC (Zhang 2011) or using simpler methods (Yang et al. 2018). The MIKE model is among the most integrated models and has been used in the past for similar cases (Singh et al. 2010), while in combination with the future climate projections of general circulation models (GCMs), can be used to investigate lake conditions under future climate scenarios. The aim of this study is to present an application for analyzing the vulnerability of a lake to climate change using the MIKE SHE/11 model using as a case study the Lake Zazari in Greece.},

abstract = {This report discusses the development of a national method for the assessment of ecological status of natural lakes in Greece, based on the Biological Quality Element (BQE) “phytoplankton”; it is a revised version of the 2016 report, following comments by JRC and Intercalibration Review Panel experts. The main changes include an amendment to modNygaard index (exclusion of Centrales, see 2.1), the exclusion of a lake’s data from the reference dataset in order to avoid ircularity in the assessment, and construction of pressure response curves with phytoplankton and TP data from lake years 2014 and 2015. At the Mediterranean Lake Geographical Intercalibration Group, Member States defined two common water body types for reservoirs (L-M5/7 and L-M8). In spite of common efforts, within the Mediterranean GIG, there was no possibility to intercalibrate natural Mediterranean lakes because of the absence of common types with enough lakes. As a result, no assessment methods for phytoplankton of natural lakes have been intercalibrated within the Med GIG. The operation of the Greek water monitoring network started in 2012, following the publication of a Joint Ministerial Decision in 2011 and comprises 23 natural lakes. The development of the current assessment method, as described in this report, is based on the data from this national water monitoring network. Natural lakes in Greece are grouped into 3 types: 1) warm monomictic, deep natural lakes with mean depth >9 m (type GR-DNL, 7 lakes), 2) polymictic, shallow natural lakes with mean depth 3-9 m (type GR-SNL, 8 lakes), 3) very shallow lakes < 3 m (type GR-VSNL, 8 lakes).},

abstract = {Assessment methods had been intercalibrated for lake types LM 5/7 (deep siliceous reservoirs) and LM 8 (deep calcareous reservoirs) (de Hoyos et al. 2014). In the first round of IC that Greece participated, boundaries for individual phytoplankton metrics (chlorophyll-a, total biovolume, percentage of cyanobacteria, IGA and MedPTI) were agreed (using option 1 of IC) and formally included in the 200 8 EC Intercalibration Decision. During the second round of IC, national assessment methods based on the above metrics (NMASRP for Cyprus and Portugal, MASRP for Spain and NITMET for Italy) were intercalibrated for LM 5/7 and LM 8 types. Greece had not started the operation of the monitoring network at that time, and thus had not submitted its national assessment method for the second round of IC. The operation of the Greek monitoring network started in 2012, following the publication of a Joint Ministerial Decision in 2011. Fifty lake water bodies have been included in the monitoring network, out of which 15 are LM 5/7 and 5 are LM 8 reservoirs. The national phytoplankton assessment method applied for Greek LM 5/7 and LM 8 reservoirs is the New Mediterranean Assessment System for Reservoirs Phytoplankton (NMASRP), that has been intercalibrated in the Med GIG, as applied by Cyprus and Portugal (i.e. the metric percentage of cyanobacteria is replaced by the metric biovolume of cyanobacteria, in order to account for algal blooms) (de Hoyos et al. 2014). Spain uses MASRP (i.e., with the metric percentage of cyanobacteria). NMASRP addresses eutrophication pressure in Mediterranean reservoirs. This report does not discuss the development of new or revised ecological assessment method for phytoplankton according to finalized IC results, but the application of the existing NMASRP phytoplankton assessment method as intercalibrated in the Med GIG (including existing MEP values and EQRs), into the national dataset. NMASRP values are calculated as annual mean. This dataset contains data collected during the 2012-2015 sampling campaign, and in particular 53 NMASRP values for LM 5/7 and 18 NMASRP values for LM 8 reservoirs arising from 139 and 56 samplings, respectively.},
